Total emissions from the use of peatlands in Poland drained for agriculture, forestry and peat extraction are estimated at 33.5 million tonnes (Mt) of CO2 equivalent per year. The value of these emissions, based on the current October 2021 price of CO2 emission permits on the European emissions market, is PLN 9.6 billion per year.

High time that we stopped heating up the atmosphere with the drying peat’s CO2 emissions. Peat must be wet! Join in and let’s rewater it together!

The Wetlands Conservation Centre is starting a series of activities aiming to popularise the rewetting of drained peatlands in Poland, including: Acquisition of selected grounds in drained wetland areas with the goal of permanently rewetting them; lobbying towards the development of financial support systems for farmers who decide to employ wetland-friendly agriculture (paludiculture); developing a mechanism for offsetting enterprises' greenhouse gas emissions through the renaturalization of peat bogs.
