Workshop entitled: "Mire conservation in northern Poland in the context of land use and spacial planning". It was organized with the support of Darwin Initiative Peatland Biodiversity Programme, through the Laboratory of Geobotany and Nature Conservation of the University of Gdansk and the Department of Nature Protection in Rural Areas - IMUZ. Attending the workshop were about 40 people - representatives of state administration, national parks, scientific institutes and non-governmental organisations. The state of mires, their threats and methods of protection were discussed. As a result of the meeting an Action Plan for Wetland Protection was developed.

At the meeting the participants took the form of a working group after the workshop in Lagow with the goal of forming a strategy for mire protection. As a result of the discussion it was decided that due to the Polish conditions and the character of the Polish mires, they should not be protected separately from all other wetlands. Also resuting from the discussion was a definte structure for the protection strategy and the most important elements that should be included.

Workshop entitled: "The introduction of efficient mire protection in Poland". It was initiated by participants of a course about mire protection and organised in the frame of that program: the Darwin Initiative Peatland Biodiversity Programme (Scotland, October 1998). Those invited to the workshop included representatives of important offices, scientific institutes and organisations interested in nature protection in Poland (a combination of about 45 people). The organisers were: the Institute of Environmental Protection, the Polish Branch of REC, the Academy of Agriculture in Szczecin and Lubuski Naturalist Club. The meeting was supported by the Darwin Initiative Peatland Biodiversity Programme and Milieukontakt Oost-Europa. Participants of the meeting discussed the state of mires, their threats and methods of protection. As a result of the meeting it was decided to initiate work on a strategy concerning mire protection.

Conference entitled: "Wetlands - their importance and conservation". It was organized in co-operation with the following institutions: The State Committee for Scientific Research (KBN), The Institute for Land Reclamation and Grassland Farming (IMUZ), Small Grant Program of the Global Environmental Fund (GEF/SGP-UNDP), The North-Podlesian Society for the Protection of Birds (PTOP), The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC) and The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The meeting was divided into three sessions:
- The Coalition for Wetland Protection;
- Problems of the protection of valuable natural wetlands;
- The Upper Narew - conservation and renaturalisation of wetlands.
Resulting from the meeting was the compliation of, amoung others, the aim, priorities and range of the Coalition's activities. As well as the publication of the seminar materials under the title: "Current problems of wetland protection".
- Warsaw, 10, March 1998
The second meeting, this time under the formal title of The Coalition for Wetland Protection, took place at the Institute for Environmental Protection in Warsaw. Resulting from the discusion, with country-wide participation including regional non-governmental organisations and scientific institutes interested in nature protection, it was decided to create The Coalition for Wetland Protection. A Programme of Declaration for PROM and Declaration of Membership will be prepared. The Poland Office of REC agreed to fulfill the fuction of "contact point" for the initiative.

The first meeting, initiated by WWF, had an informal character. It took place in Warsaw, at the IUCN Regional Office in Poland. At the meeting were representatives from several organizations directly or indirectly involved in nature protection: mgr I. Chojnacki (WWF), mgr P. Czajkowski (UNDP-GEF/SGP), mgr A. Grobicki (IUCN), mgr M. Kaczynska (REC), dr M. Keller (consultant UNDP-GEF/SGP and Ecofund), prof. dr hab. S. Kozlowski (Komitet Człowiek i Środowisko PAN), dr A. Liro (The National Fund for Environmental Protection), mgr L. Michno (Milieukontakt Oost Europa), mgr I. Mirowski (Ecofund), dr P. Nawrocki (WWF), dr Z. Tederko (IUCN) and mgr A. Weigle (The National Fund for Environmental Protection). The meeting resulted in the creation of The Coalition for Wetland Protection, whose goal will be to increase the protection of wetland areas in Poland.
