The Institute for Environmental Protection has prepared a proposal for the protection of new wetland areas under the framework of the Ramsar Convention. Proposed sites containing mire habitats are: sub-alpine mires in Karkonosze (Karkonosze National Park), calcareous mires near Chelm (3 reserves within Chelm Landscape Park and one in the buffer zone) and Polesie National Park and Narew National Park. Proposed sites encompassing inland water bodies are: the Przemków Ponds, the Lake Druzno Reserve, Wigry National Park and the Middle Vistula Valley. If the proposed areas on the list are added to the Ramsar Sites under the framework of the Convention, the area under Polish protection will be quadrupled. The decision lies with the Ministry of the Environment. Everyone is encouraged to express their support for this proposition. A full description of the proposal can be found in the publication "Environmental protection and natural resources" no. 19, IOS (Institute for Environmental Protection), Warsaw 2000.
