Dear .......................................
We warmly invite you to partake in the workshop entitled "Review and Development of Peatland Management Planning in Poland", which will take place on November 3-5, 2000 at the Zbyszko Hotel in Goniadz, located in the buffer zone of Biebrza National Park.
The workshop will be the third in a series (after the workshops; "Introducing effective policies for the conservation of mire biodiversity in Poland" in Lagów in 1999 and "Mire conservation in northern Poland in the context of land use and spatial planning" in Wizna on the 16-18 of March 2000) organised by the particpants in the course sponsered by the University of Dundee in Scotland under the Darwin Initiative Peatland Biodiversity Programme (PDP).
As a result of the first workshop was the creation of The Coalition for Wetland Protection (PROM). During the second workshop in Wizna participants prepared The Action Plan for Wetland Protection in northern Poland. The planned workshop will attempt to implement one of the areas identified in the Action Plan.
Practical protection of mires and peatland in Poland is realised mainly within the framework of the established system of protected areas. In these areas about 3500 km2 of mires are protected. This means 28% of the total peatland area. Apart from nature reserves designated specifically for mire protection, there is a considerable number of nature reserves (that include mires) that have been designated for other reasons. According to legal regulations, each protected area should be managed according to a plan, written by an appointed specialist. At present, such plans are being prepared for the majority of national parks, landscape parks and nature reserves as well as for several Ramsar sites.
One of the specific objectives will be to develop skills of the participants for creating more effective management plans in peatland nature reserves, national parks and NGO nature reserves. Three sites will be chosen as case studies, with the relevant information prepared before the workshop. The management plan process will encompass all aspects of site development, including education and awareness, ecological management and monitoring, financial planning and development control. The meeting will review the progress that has been done since last meeting.
